HOW TO GET TO THE SMUGGLER’S....

The obvious way is to drive using the B3199 Teignmouth to Dawlish road which in turn becomes the A379 leading to Exeter.

HOW TO GET TO THE SMUGGLER’S – MORE INTERESTING WAYS

Why not try walking along the sea wall from Teignmouth and then up Smuggler’s lane, from there one can either walk along the road to the pub or rejoin the Coastal Footpath which does a loop back down to the railway line and then rejoins the road just past the Inn. This is about  2 miles and takes about 35 mins from Teignmouth. From the pub you can walk on to Dawlish which is nicely downhill and takes about 15 mins and then possibly take the train back to Teignmouth.

After lunch trains from Dawlish to Teignmouth during the winter months leave at 13:37, 14:39, 15:14, 15:44, 16:13, 16:44, on Monday to Friday,

13:43, 14:04, 14:27, 14:43, 15:28, 15:44, 16:23 & 16:46 on Saturdays.

13:43, 14:04, 14:27, 14:43, 15:28, 15:44, 16:23 & 16:46 on Sundays.

Alternatively there is a frequent bus service with stops just before and after the Inn. If you want to go the other way there are obviously  similarly frequent trains in the other direction.

Local History

The rugged coastline of Devon has long been associated with smuggling. The high cliffs, secret coves and hidden villages made it dangerous for land based revenue services to patrol effectively.

During the 18th & 19th centuries most of the governments revenue came from customs duties and taxes on overseas trade as income tax hadn't yet been invented.

In addition during most of this time England was at war either with France or her American colonies which pushed duties to punitive rates being 125% on some items such as tea. During the Napoleonic wars, tobacco bought for £10 in the Netherlands port of Flushing, would be worth £100 here!

The goods most commonly smuggled inwards were luxuries and included tea, tobacco, spirits, fine fabrics and fashionable clothes.
